Adam Rossington's Explosive Century Keeps Pokhara Avengers' Playoff Dreams Alive! | NPL Highlights (2025)

In a thrilling display of cricketing prowess, Adam Rossington single-handedly ignited Pokhara's playoff aspirations with an extraordinary performance! His masterful batting not only secured a crucial victory but also etched his name into the NPL history books. Let's dive into the details of this unforgettable match.

Rossington's journey to dominance began with a seemingly quiet start. After a couple of initial dot balls, he cautiously took a single. But, the calm before the storm was evident as he unleashed a six and two consecutive fours. By the end of the first innings, he had smashed an incredible 11 fours and 7 sixes, remaining unbeaten with a score of 108 off 58 deliveries. This stellar performance propelled the Pokhara Avengers to a commanding 201/2 in just 20 overs.

This wasn't just any century; it was the NPL's third-ever, the second of the season, and the second-highest individual score in the league's history. Furthermore, it was only the second time a team had surpassed the 200-run mark. Talk about making an impact!

Pokhara, after losing the toss, found themselves batting first. Rossington opened alongside skipper Kushal Bhurtel, who was playing in that position for the first time in five matches. Bhurtel showed promise, but his innings ended at 18 off 17 balls. By the end of the powerplay, the score was 44/1. Little did anyone know, the best was yet to come.

Rossington, a 32-year-old from England's domestic scene, forged a remarkable 127-run partnership with his English teammate, Jason Roy. Roy, with an impressive international record of 116 ODIs, 64 T20Is, and five Tests, fell just short of a half-century in his first NPL match. Roy's departure at 46 off 34 brought the team to 161/2 in 16.5 overs.

Rossington continued his onslaught, partnering with Dhananjaya Lakshan (23 off 11), a Sri Lankan all-rounder making his NPL debut. Completing his maiden NPL ton in a mere 55 deliveries, Rossington became only the third player to score a century in the NPL, and the second of the season.

"It was a good feeling," Rossington shared at the post-match conference. "The partnership with Roy was great for us. It was what helped the pressure get off of me."

Defending a 200+ target proved challenging, as the pitch favored the batsmen. After a wide delivery in the first ball of the second innings, Mark Watt, the season's first centurion, hammered a maximum. Karnali started strong, scoring 17 runs off the first over. However, Panchal's quick exit at 16 off 11 put Karnali at 34 runs. Watt kept Karnali in the chase.

But here's where it gets controversial... With wickets falling, Watt was caught out, attempting his sixth six. "Watt’s wicket was the most important one for us because he was batting very well,” Rossington said. "The pitch was favourable for the batsmen, so defending the big target was still not easy.”

Rossington currently leads the NPL Season 2 run-scorers with 253 runs in five innings, followed by Watt (242 runs in six innings) and Ravi Bopara (207 runs in five innings).

Karnali's skipper Sompal Kami conceded 50 runs in his four overs without taking a wicket. Raju Basnyat, the Yaks' coach, pointed to the lack of partnerships and momentum as the reason for their loss.

Karnali was bundled out at 167 runs in 19 overs. Lakshan and Dhawan took three wickets each, while Thagunna, Chhetri, and Bhurtel picked one each for the Avengers, securing a 34-run victory.

The win elevated Pokhara to fourth place with four points from two wins in five matches. Meanwhile, the Yaks are out of the playoffs after their fifth loss in six matches.

Basnyat emphasized the need for more tournaments at various levels to nurture domestic talent. "It will allow domestic players to be in a better form for the NPL, where they will learn more against the experienced players coming from around the world.”

In other news, the defending champions, Janakpur Bolts, finally secured their first win of the season! After a tough start, they defeated the Chitwan Rhinos.

Sah, who missed the previous match, returned in style, smashing 61 off 36 to help his team chase down 177 runs with 15 balls to spare. The Rhinos' innings saw a strong start with a 112-run partnership between Malan and Saud. Malan scored 80 off 54, but the Rhinos fell short. Janakpur responded with two half-centuries from Sadaqat and Sah, along with contributions from Sheikh, Loftie-Eaton, and Mahata, securing their victory.

Numerically, both the Bolts and Rhinos, along with Pokhara and Lumbini, still have a shot at the playoffs. Biratnagar Kings and Lumbini Lions will face off on Wednesday, with a win for the Kings guaranteeing them a playoff spot.
