A whirlwind of emotions surrounds the return of Paige Bueckers to her former UConn stomping grounds. It's a mix of nostalgia and excitement as the basketball star, now a key player in the WNBA, revisits the team she once led to glory. But what does it feel like for those left behind? Let's dive in.
Bueckers, fresh off a phenomenal run that included a national championship, a WNBA All-Star Game start, Rookie of the Year honors, and a spot on the All-WNBA Second Team, is back in Storrs, Connecticut. This visit comes at a pivotal time for her former team, the UConn Huskies, who are gearing up for a significant matchup against USC on Saturday, the 13th, after a dominant 102-35 victory over DePaul.
Her return brings a unique dynamic to the team, as highlighted by her girlfriend, Azzi Fudd, who still plays for UConn. Fudd describes the experience as 'bittersweet.'
"We miss you guys. We miss having you here." Fudd shared, but she also acknowledged the excitement and challenge Bueckers' presence brings. "The energy they bring, and obviously, they make the red team a lot better when they’re playing. And it’s more of a challenge for us, so it gives us better competition, different things to look at."
But here's where it gets controversial... Losing a player of Bueckers' caliber, who went on to win WNBA Rookie of the Year, naturally requires an adjustment period. UConn has navigated this transition remarkably well, starting the season with a 9-0 record, with only one game decided by fewer than 12 points.
Fudd believes the team is adapting effectively, stating, "We’ve done a pretty good job. Obviously, when you lose someone like Paige, it’s not one person who’s gonna fill that void. It’s everyone’s gotta step up and do a little more. People have really stepped up. I mean, Paige did so much, the scoring, rebounding, the court vision, the I.Q., and the leadership. We’ve been playing well together so far. So, if we can continue to get better, trend upward without Paige, we’ll be just fine."
During her final season at UConn, Bueckers averaged 19.9 points per game (PPG), 4.6 assists per game (APG), 4.4 rebounds per game (RPG), and 2.1 steals per game (SPG), leading the team to their first national championship since 2016.
In the WNBA, Bueckers continued her impressive performance with the Dallas Wings, averaging 19.2 PPG, 5.4 APG, and 3.4 RPG. The key difference? While UConn thrived, the Wings faced challenges last year, a situation Bueckers aims to rectify in her second WNBA season.
And this is the part most people miss... The impact of a player like Bueckers extends far beyond the stats. It's about leadership, court vision, and the ability to elevate the game of those around her. Her return to UConn isn't just a visit; it's a reminder of the legacy she built and the lasting influence she continues to have on the sport.
