A tragedy unfolded near the White House last week, leaving two National Guard members victims of a deadly shooting. New details have emerged, painting a clearer picture of the events that transpired on November 26, 2025. This incident, just blocks from the White House, has sent shockwaves through the community.
U.S. Army Spc. Sarah Beckstrom and U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe were on patrol near the intersection of 17th and I Streets in northwest Washington, D.C., when the attack occurred. According to a detailed eight-page complaint filed by Metropolitan Police Department Detective Joshua Branson, both victims were in full uniform.
A photo taken from video surveillance shows the alleged gunman next to Beckstrom and Wolfe after the shooting. The charging document, reviewed by USA TODAY, indicates the suspect allegedly used a revolver.
Staff Sgt. Wolfe, aged 24 and from Martinsburg, West Virginia, fought for his life after the shooting. Sadly, Spc. Beckstrom, aged 20 and from Summersville, West Virginia, succumbed to her injuries just over a day after the attack.
The suspect, 29-year-old Rahmanullah Lakanwal, appeared in court virtually from a hospital bed on December 2. He faces charges including murder, assault with intent to kill, and possession of a firearm during a violent crime.
What We Know About the Shooting:
The shooting occurred at approximately 2:13 p.m. Court records reveal that before the gunfire, the defendant was seen near the Farragut West Metro station. The records show the defendant appeared to glance at the intersection before running towards the area.
At the time of the shooting, two majors with the Army National Guard were talking with Beckstrom and Wolfe. One witness reported seeing the pair fall to the ground while the defendant fired a gun and shouted, "Allahu Akbar!" This Arabic phrase translates to "God is greatest."
Beckstrom and Wolfe were found unresponsive with gunshot wounds to the head and were transported to hospitals in critical condition. A witness immediately engaged the defendant with their service weapon. In the ensuing gunfight, the suspect was shot and fell. Another person intervened to prevent the suspect from reloading. Both witnesses and U.S. Secret Service officers helped apprehend the suspect. Beckstrom was pronounced dead on November 27.
The Autopsy Report:
An autopsy conducted by Dr. Kristinza Giese confirmed Beckstrom died from a single gunshot wound to the back of the head. Her death was ruled a homicide.
But here's where it gets controversial... The witness's account of the suspect shouting a religious phrase has raised questions. Could this be a case of religiously motivated violence, or is there more to the story?
And this is the part most people miss... The speed at which events unfolded and the immediate response of the witnesses highlight the intensity of the situation.
