The Arizona Cardinals' coaching search continues to heat up, with two more defensive coordinators entering the mix. This comes as another NFL coaching spot opens up, adding to the league-wide drama.
On Tuesday, reports emerged that the Cardinals were interviewing Jesse Minter, the defensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Chargers. Minter is expected to be a popular candidate, with multiple teams showing interest in his services. This brings the total number of candidates linked to the Cardinals' search to a dozen, as GM Monti Ossenfort and owner Michael Bidwill embark on their quest to find a new football leader.
But here's where it gets controversial... The Cardinals aren't stopping at Minter. Later on Tuesday, it was revealed that they were also reaching out to Matt Burke, the defensive coordinator for the Houston Texans. Burke has an interesting connection to the Cardinals, having coached their defensive line during Kliff Kingsbury's final season as head coach. Now, he's calling plays for the NFL's top-ranked defense. With John Harbaugh already in the mix, Burke becomes the 13th name linked to Arizona's coaching search.
And this is the part most people miss: the Cardinals aren't the only team with a coaching vacancy. On the same day, longtime Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin announced his departure after 19 seasons. This creates a ninth open head coaching position in the NFL this cycle, with no hires made yet.
Coincidentally, there were also nine openings in 2023, the last time the Cardinals hired a new coach. Will history repeat itself? Only time will tell.
So, what do you think? Are the Cardinals on the right track with their coaching search? Or should they be considering other options? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
