Chris Billam-Smith is a man with a plan, and he's eyeing the cruiserweight division with determination. Despite a setback last year, losing his WBO title to Gilberto Ramirez, he's back and ready to make a statement.
But here's where it gets interesting. Billam-Smith isn't just focused on the cruiserweight titles; he's got his sights set on a potential heavyweight challenge, specifically Deontay Wilder.
"I know my style isn't suited for the heavyweight division," he says, "but I'd jump at the chance to fight Wilder."
Billam-Smith believes his past experiences against powerful punchers have prepared him for such a challenge. "I've proven I can handle those big right hands," he adds.
However, he's not looking to make a permanent move up in weight. Wilder is an exception, a unique opportunity.
"It's not about the division," he clarifies. "It's about the fight."
And this is the part most people miss: Billam-Smith isn't just chasing titles; he's crafting a strategic path to success.
His immediate focus is on the cruiserweight division, where Noel Mikaelian holds the WBC title. Beating Mikaelian would be a direct route back to the top.
But the division is about to get more complicated. David Benavidez, a light heavyweight, is expected to challenge Ramirez for the WBA and WBO titles. If Benavidez wins, it changes the entire landscape, and Billam-Smith is ready to pounce.
"We want Benavidez to beat Zurdo, and then we want to fight him," he says. "It's a clear path."
The reasoning is simple: Benavidez beating Ramirez would create a direct link to Billam-Smith's past, a chance to reclaim what was lost.
"It's a name fight, a big fight," he adds.
And then there's Jai Opetaia, the IBF champion. Billam-Smith has a clear vision: beat Mikaelian, challenge Benavidez, and then take on Opetaia.
"That's the ideal route," he says. "It gives me leverage, control."
He knows the boxing world can be unpredictable, but he's confident in his strategy.
"I'm choosing my battles wisely," he concludes. "I'm not getting any younger, and I want to make the most of this opportunity."
So, will Billam-Smith's plan come to fruition? Only time will tell, but one thing's for sure: he's not afraid to take on the big names and make his mark.
