Jim Jarmusch's 'Father Mother Sister Brother' showcases a unique color scheme across three distinct segments, each exploring family dynamics. The film's setting spans New York, Dublin, and Paris, with a recurring deep red hue in the characters' contemporary attire. Costume designer Catherine George reveals the creative process behind this thematic choice.
The red theme originated from Jarmusch's vision, influenced by his perception of colors. George explains, 'In the last few years, he's been seeing colors differently, and red, in particular, holds a new significance for him.' This collaboration with Saint Laurent, a French fashion house, resulted in a cohesive and captivating wardrobe.
Each segment features a sibling pair, with varying interactions with their parents. The first two segments depict siblings with somewhat uncomfortable family dynamics, while the Paris segment focuses on a twin brother and sister reminiscing about their deceased parents. The costumes, designed by George, are everyday items, yet each piece is a masterpiece crafted by Saint Laurent.
In the 'Father' segment, Tom Waits' character is portrayed as an eccentric, solitary dad. The costume design team initially considered a robe or pajamas, but ultimately decided on a hoodie, which Waits embraced. The hoodie, with its subtle burgundy lining, added depth to the character's portrayal.
The 'Mother' segment introduces Cate Blanchett and Vicky Krieps, who visit their stiff novelist mother, Charlotte Rampling. Krieps' character, a 'party girl' with pink-tinted hair and a red sweater, contrasts with Blanchett's uptight persona, signaled by her oxford shirt and burgundy turtleneck. Rampling's character, a successful novelist, is dressed in a burgundy shirtdress, a couture creation inspired by an YSL jumpsuit design.
The final segment, 'Sister, Brother,' features twins Indya Moore and Luka Sabbat in Paris. Their naturalistic and free-spirited personalities are reflected in their biker jackets, with subtle similarities despite their distinct versions. Indya's character wears a red tank top, a nod to George's own collection, while Luka's character remains in a classic white T-shirt, a nod to iconic movie characters.
