A devastating fire in Hyderabad has left an iconic landmark, the Shahalibanda clock tower, severely damaged. This tragic incident has sparked concerns among locals and historians alike, as the clock tower holds immense historical value and cultural significance.
The fire, which broke out at the Gomathi Enterprises Shahalibanda on Monday night, not only damaged the electronics showroom but also resulted in a powerful CNG cylinder explosion. The clock tower, a majestic gateway to the sprawling compound, suffered extensive damage, with the clock itself stopping at 10:21 pm.
But here's where it gets controversial... The Shahalibanda clock tower is an integral part of a grand royal residence known as the Devdi. Over time, a significant portion of this magnificent palace has been demolished, leaving only the clock tower and a few remnants of its noble past. Historians trace the Devdi's origins back to the family of Rai Raiyans, who served as Daftardar (a revenue officer) in the court of the third Nizam Sikandar Jah from 1795 to 1797.
The clock tower, built in 1904, is a unique blend of European and local architectural styles. What sets it apart is its ability to display time in four languages: English, Hindi, Roman, and Telugu. This multilingual feature adds to its cultural and historical importance.
And this is the part most people miss... The Devdi, constructed in 1757, originally spanned an impressive 2.5 acres and boasted some of the best architecture in the princely state. In addition to the structural damage, the fire claimed the life of at least one person, and seven others were injured. Among the injured, four have been identified, including Shiva, 49, the owner of Gomti electronics, who is currently admitted to Princess Esra Hospital. Shaik Ahmed, 42, Ganesh, 22, and Kartik, 22, have been admitted to Urooj Hospital.
