While traveling from Kyoto to Tokyo, he stumbled upon the manga in a bookstore at Shinagawa Station. “I was immediately drawn to the figure’s back on the cover,” he recalled. “That night, I read it in one sitting and felt the creator’s desperate resolve—almost painfully—as if Fujimoto couldn’t move forward without bringing this story to life.” This emotional connection mirrors Kore-eda’s own experience with his film Nobody Knows, making the adaptation deeply personal.
