A shocking story has emerged from the historic Michigan Theatre in Jackson, Michigan. The former Executive Director, Steve Tucker, has revealed a tumultuous journey that led to his unexpected termination.
A Tale of Unfair Treatment
Tucker's statement, released on February 4th, sheds light on the tensions that developed between the management team and the board of directors. He describes a series of minor operational issues and disputes over trivial matters that escalated after a change in the board's composition in 2025.
"It became clear that certain board members were determined to replace me as Executive Director, for reasons that were never disclosed to me or anyone else," Tucker wrote.
He had no intention of retiring and planned to continue for several years to ensure the theater's stability and prepare a successor. However, last fall, the board's actions and their apparent desire to make his life at the theater miserable led Tucker to consider retirement as an escape.
The Board's Version
In contrast, the theater board's statement, published earlier, paints a different picture. They claim Tucker had expressed his intention to retire in March, and the board's decision to end his directorship on January 22nd was based on governance considerations and the organization's long-term sustainability.
But here's where it gets controversial: Tucker disputes this narrative, stating that he never submitted a formal resignation or retirement notice. He was given a termination letter on January 22nd, which came as a complete shock.
A Community in Uproar
The news has sparked outrage among theater supporters and the community. Many have taken to social media to express their support for Tucker, crediting him with the theater's revitalization. Some have even called for a boycott or vowed to withhold support until the situation is resolved.
"These donors, members, and friends believe in the theater and its mission. I am grateful for their support," Tucker wrote.
Under his leadership, the theater underwent a successful $6.2 million restoration project, completing it on time and under budget. Tucker's team also established a substantial endowment to cover future maintenance costs, ensuring the theater's financial security.
A Response to Inaccuracies
Tucker felt compelled to respond to the board's statement, which he believes contains serious inaccuracies. The board had planned a celebratory event to honor Tucker after his supposed retirement announcement. However, they asked him to step aside on December 31st to allow for a smooth transition and bring in an Interim Director.
The board offered to continue Tucker's salary until his official retirement and proposed he stay on as fund development director beyond March 14th, working fewer hours but remaining an integral part of the theater.
"That offer still stands," the board's statement read.
A Friend's Perspective
Philip Curtis, a Jackson lawyer and theater supporter, shared his concerns. He described Tucker as always being at the theater, seven days a week, dedicating much of his life to its success. Curtis believes the board's actions will be extremely damaging to the theater unless the situation is rectified, calling it a huge injustice.
"I don't recall something that has raised the ire of the community as much as this has," Curtis said.
The Michigan Theatre, designed by architect Maurice Finkel, is an architectural gem and a cultural landmark in Jackson. With its Spanish Renaissance style and 1,800 seats, it has a rich history and has been named to both the State and National Registers of Historic Places.
