Roald Dahl's Secret James Bond Script: You Only Live Twice Unveiled in Buckinghamshire (2026)

Unveiling Roald Dahl's Secret Bond: A Controversial Collaboration

Uncovering a hidden gem in the world of espionage and literature, the Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre presents an extraordinary glimpse into the author's foray into the world of James Bond.

Imagine walking into a museum, only to discover a hidden treasure trove of secrets and creativity. That's exactly what awaits visitors at the Roald Dahl Museum, where an original James Bond film script, penned by the renowned author himself, has made a temporary appearance.

But here's where it gets controversial... Dahl, known for his imaginative children's books, took on the task of writing a screenplay for the iconic spy franchise, 'You Only Live Twice'. This collaboration, which began in 1967, is now on display, offering a unique insight into Dahl's adult writing and his connection to the world of espionage.

The film, based on Ian Fleming's book, stars Sean Connery as the suave British spy. However, the real story lies in the connection between Dahl and Fleming. Both were fighter pilots during World War II and later worked in intelligence, a fact that adds a layer of intrigue to their friendship and subsequent collaboration.

"They were similar characters, irascible, witty, and caustic, with a shared passion for writing," said Steve Gardam, director of the museum. This shared background and interest in writing led to Dahl being tasked with turning a first draft of the script around in just eight weeks - a challenge he accepted.

And this is the part most people miss... Dahl's experience as a fighter pilot and his role in espionage heavily influenced the script. The scene where Bond, played by Connery, pilots the autogyro Little Nellie while under attack from SPECTRE helicopters is a direct reflection of Dahl's own experiences in the Battle of Athens. His autobiography, 'Going Solo', describes this dogfight as an 'endless blur of enemy fighters'.

The display at the museum also features personal items of Dahl's, including a photograph of him on set with the film's director, Lewis Gilbert, and his own 007 tie. Even his personal set of boules and an inventive magnet on a string, designed by Dahl himself, are on display, showcasing his ingenuity.

"It's fascinating to see how Dahl's inventiveness, so evident in his children's books, also found its way into the Bond screenplay," said Will Phillips, head of collections at the museum. "The suction boots from 'The Gremlins' and 'Billy and the Minpins' even make an appearance in the film!"

This unique display, which includes over 100 boxes of Dahl's personal possessions, will be available at the Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre until January 31, 2026.

So, what do you think? Is this a fascinating glimpse into the mind of a literary genius, or a controversial collaboration that shouldn't have happened? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments below!
