A brand-new, state-of-the-art film studio, PlayMaker Studios, is rising just outside Riyadh, signaling a bold move into global entertainment. This isn't just any studio; it's a key part of the ambitious Qiddiya entertainment city, a sprawling complex designed to draw millions with its theme parks, motorsport facilities, and even a safari park.
PlayMaker Studios is a sprawling complex, spanning over 50 acres of backlots. It boasts two purpose-built soundstages equipped with top-of-the-line audio systems, and full production facilities designed to meet the needs of ambitious, global productions. The hub also includes production offices and premium on-site amenities, offering a seamless, end-to-end environment for every stage of production. This includes dedicated post-production, visual effects facilities, and music studios. Plus, producers get streamlined access to Saudi Arabiaâs enticing 40% production rebate.
The first project to grace these impressive facilities is the historical epic, "Unbroken Sword." Directed by Alik Sakharov, who has helmed episodes of the iconic "Sopranos" and "Game of Thrones," the film is set in 7th-century Arabia. It follows a mythical warrior leading an outnumbered Muslim army against the Roman and Persian empires. Production is set to begin in early 2026, with a crew of over 200 already on the ground. The film is backed by Saudiâs General Entertainment Authority and Riyadh Season, and produced by Sela.
But here's where it gets controversial... The project is part of Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 plan, spearheaded by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, aiming to diversify the economy and create jobs. This initiative, backed by the Public Investment Fund, includes several so-called âgiga projects,â with Qiddiya being one of the most significant.
The executive producer of "Unbroken Sword" is Richard Sharkey, whose impressive resume includes credits like "House of the Dragon," "Marco Polo," and the "Lord of the Rings" franchises. He calls the project the start of something genuinely groundbreaking.
