Triple Eight, a powerhouse in the racing scene, has embarked on a bold mission: to revolutionize their engine game. With a fresh partnership and a switch in suppliers, they're diving deep into the heart of their Ford engines.
But here's where it gets controversial... While the base package of the 5.4-litre Coyote V8 has received positive reviews from drivers, the real challenge lies in ensuring its reliability. Team manager Mark Dutton reveals that they're in the thick of understanding and testing, aiming to iron out those pesky failures from last year.
"The drivers gave the engine a thumbs up, but we're not resting on our laurels. Reliability is our top priority right now," Dutton shared with Speedcafe.
And this is the part most people miss... It's not just about power gains. With performance aspects tightly controlled, Triple Eight's focus is on those 'tidy ups' - optimizing airflow, shifting throttle bodies, and ensuring every component is balanced.
"Little tweaks like these won't boost power, but they're essential for a smooth and efficient engine," Dutton explained.
With their new engine shop up and running, Triple Eight has already produced eight new engines and given five a fresh lease of life with half-life rebuilds. But when can we expect further upgrades? Dutton highlights the lengthy process of analysis, testing, and homologation, leaving us on the edge of our seats.
A particular area of focus is the crankshaft, where cracking has been reported. Despite a last-minute supplier change for the 2024 Bathurst 1000, the team is determined to get to the bottom of this issue.
"We're putting our engineering might to the test. It's a complex puzzle, but we're committed to finding a solution," Dutton said.
However, there's a twist in the tale. In January, the man leading this engine revolution, Cam Clancy, unexpectedly left the team. With just two full-time staff in the engine shop, former MPT employees Kaz Penwarden and Brent Blakey, the future of this department is a topic of discussion.
"We're confident we can handle the workload as a team. Kaz and Brent have stepped up, and we're bringing in fresh talent soon. We believe in our ability to deliver," Dutton assured.
